The rubber dam in dentistry is a flexible cloth made of latex that is used to shield the tooth to be treated from the rest of the oral cavity. A version without latex is available for allergy sufferers.

The rubber dam is used to completely shield one or more teeth from their surroundings. This is known as "absolute isolation" and can be used, for example, for root canal treatment, the insertion of fillings or the removal of an amalgam filling.

It also prevents foreign bodies from being swallowed or aspirated during treatment. The rubber dam is temporarily fixed to the neck of the tooth with a metal clamp.
The use of the rubber dam involves hardly any risks and is usually painless.

The advantages are

Avoidance of aspiration and swallowing of foreign bodies during treatment.
    The "absolute drainage".
Isolation prevents contact of allergenic and irritating materials with the oral mucosa.
Reduction of aerosol exposure and germ exposure for staff.

The disadvantages/contraindications are

The rubber dam clamp can injure the tooth neck or gums if too much pressure is applied, but this is reversible.
Excessive tension can cause mechanical damage to the tooth neck (chipping).
    The mouth cannot be closed.
    Unrestricted nasal breathing is essential.
Contraindication in case of latex allergy (latex-free rubber dams are available as an alternative). -Contraindication for gag reflex -Contraindication for anxiety patients -Contraindication for epilepsy patients -Contraindication in connection with cervical fillings -Contraindication due to provocation of increased bleeding in the case of gingivitis. -Tolerance of the patient to cooperate is necessary. -Pay special attention to leaks as visual inspection is more difficult. For example, amalgam restoration residues cannot be detected

A good alternative to the rubber dam is "relative draining", which is only possible with the help of an assistant. Aids such as small and large saliva ejectors, cotton balls, saliva absorbers and a powerful air flow keep the working area dry in a similar way to the rubber dam.
